THE LEDE: Good morning. The osprey is a handsome creature, built exquisitely for what it does. They are found plentifully in several places dotted around Brooklyn, and they need your help.

The Rundown

  • Dolly Parton’s philanthropy was based on ‘her belief in the goodness of people’: Dolly Parton didn’t think her philanthropy made her special. She thought it was just part of being human.

  • The osprey: A wonderful Brooklyn bird that needs our help: Ospreys can be found in Bush Terminal Park. Sunset Park has dedicated osprey nesting structures along the waterfront. Calvert Vaux Park is another site, as is Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. So is the East River.

  • Police arrest suspect who aimed for man but shot service dog in Greenwood Heights: Adrian Benitez, 29, was arrested around 8:15 a.m. Tuesday and charged with attempted murder, three counts of assault, criminal possession of a weapon, reckless endangerment and aggravated cruelty to animals, police said.

  • Florida firearms dealer pleads guilty to exporting weapons parts to Kazakhstan: Maxim Larin, 44, of Plantation, admitted to evading United States export laws by mislabeling and undervaluing weapons parts and accessories meant to fuel the Russian war machine.

  • Green-Wood Cemetery hosts The Battle of Brooklyn 250: The cemetery was one of six sites that celebrated Brooklyn 250, a boroughwide commemoration of the Battle of Brooklyn.

  • Why social media algorithms send you posts you don’t like: Algorithms heavily weigh online posts that you reply to, and social media users tend to more often comment on content they take issue with than content they agree with.

  • Our world in photos: Smiles, stars, swings and more.
