The Lede: Good morning. A local reporter, armed with a bucket, a small scoop and a pair of rubber gloves, collected samples of snow from three different neighborhoods — Williamsburg, Washington Heights and Jackson Heights — in search of answers.

  • New state bill would ban ‘surveillance pricing’ in stores: The Protecting Consumers and Jobs from Discriminatory Pricing Act would make illegal the use of algorithms, surveillance technology and digital price tags to display different prices to different customers based on guesses over what each customer might be willing to pay.

  • Gothamist tested what’s in the city’s snow piles, and it’s not pretty: Gothamist asked a lab to test for bacteria and 25 different metals, and the results “mostly confirm” what you might have suspected. “The snow acts like a revolting sponge for the city’s filth,” Joe Hong wrote.

  • Man celebrates love with massive Valentine’s Day decorations outside his home: A Bay Ridge native who decorates the outside of his home for the holidays is once again capturing the spirit of Valentine’s Day.

  • Gun accessory company to pay $1.75M to Buffalo supermarket shooting victims: The maker of a gun accessory tied to a racist shooting that killed 10 Black people at a supermarket in Buffalo will pay $1.75 million to survivors and victims’ families and stop selling the device in New York, state Attorney General Letitia James said Wednesday.

  • Top administrative judge says judge shortage remains biggest challenge for NYC courts: As court leaders prepare to seek a budget increase in Albany, Chief Administrative Judge Joseph Zayas says that a persistent shortage of judges continues to strain New York City’s courts.

  • FDNY graduates 181 new firefighters in Brooklyn: The class included 126 candidates who were promoted after serving as FDNY officers, paramedics and emergency medical technicians with the FDNY’s Bureau of Emergency Medical Services.

  • ‘Second Sundays’ offers hands-on look at interdisciplinary Pioneer Works in Red Hook: Visitors braved Arctic weather to attend Pioneer Works’ monthly “Second Sundays” event in Red Hook last weekend.
