Weather: Day 29°, Night 11°, Snow Likely

The Lede: Good morning. The city is experiencing colder temperatures this week than any sustained period in the last eight years, Mayor Zohran Mamdani said Sunday during a press conference at Emergency Management headquarters in Downtown Brooklyn. The city wants residents to just hunker down on Monday — stay home and especially, stay off the roads.

The Rundown

  • Mamdani: No snow day Monday, kids: To the disappointment of public school kids across the city, there will be no time-honored snow day today. Mayor Zohran Mamdani appeared wistful remembering his own past snow days. “I will tell you that growing up in the city, snow days were one of my favorite memories,” he said.

  • Hunker down: NYC’s huge snow-clearing operation is underway: As of 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, the storm dumped 10.5 inches of snow on Williamsburg, according to the National Weather Service. Even before the snow began to fall, five city residents were found outside, deceased.

  • AG Letitia James warns of price gouging ahead of blizzard: New York law prohibits businesses from taking advantage of consumers by selling vital products for an excessive price during emergencies.

  • Movie Review: ‘Mel Brooks: The 99 Year Old Man!’ is a sweeping tribute to a comic genius: “The 99 Year Old Man,” which debuted Thursday in two parts on HBO and HBO Max, is a big-hearted tribute to Brooks, an indefatigable comic force born in Williamsburg who did more than most anyone to lighten the mood of the 20th century.

  • CB 10 approves 11-story building for housing, supermarket in Bay Ridge: The mixed-use development proposal includes roughly 110,000 square feet for 97 housing units and 18,000 square feet for commercial use.

  • More than 20 dogs rescued from filthy Greenpoint apartment: The dogs were placed in the care of ASPCA, where they are undergoing veterinary forensic exams and treatment as part of an ongoing criminal investigation.

  • Defendant sentenced for kidnapping and sexually abusing a minor: In federal court in Brooklyn, Ahmed Alaahri was sentenced by United States District Judge Eric Komitee to 11 years in prison for kidnapping and sexually abusing a 17-year-old victim.

  • Brooklyn Museum to host exhibition on designer Iris van Herpen: Debuting in 2023 in Paris, the exhibition will launch in Brooklyn on May 16 at the museum’s annual Brooklyn Artists Ball, where Iris van Herpen will be honored.

  • 2 teens arrested over Gravesend Park swastika vandalism: The playground was vandalized twice. The pair are facing charges of aggravated harassment and criminal mischief as a hate crime.
