The Lede: Good morning. Roughly 1,300 people gathered at tables and sat on stoops on Remsen Street and Montague Terrace Saturday for the Longest Table 2026, a dress-how-you-like and eat-what-you-want potluck in Brooklyn Heights.

The Rundown

  • Macy’s July Fourth fireworks to be visible from lower Hudson and East rivers: The Macy’s Fourth of July fireworks this year will take place in both the lower East River near the Brooklyn Bridge and the South Street Seaport District; and the lower Hudson River, in celebration of the nation’s 250th birthday.

  • Table for 1,300: The Longest Table 2026 brings together a neighborly crowd in Brooklyn Heights: Though only the second year for the gigantic get-together, the event has already become a beloved neighborhood tradition, attracting twice as many participants as it did in its inaugural year.

  • For first time, NYC’s libraries to have permanent, baseline funding: New York City’s 200 public libraries will no longer have to plead and protest for operating funding in an annual “budget dance,” Mayor Zohran Mamdani said Friday.

  • Body found floating in East River off Brooklyn’s Pier 5: A 911 call was placed about a man in the water at around 8:30 a.m. on Friday, police said. Officers responding found him floating unresponsive around 30 feet away from the pier. He was declared dead at the scene.

  • Riders navigate the first weekday of Long Island Rail Road’s strike: Commuters in New York City’s suburbs navigated a gauntlet of car, bus and subway routes to get to work Monday after a strike on the Long Island Rail Road that shut down the nation’s busiest commuter rail system entered its third day.

  • ‘Family Spring Fling’ in Brooklyn Heights brings something for everyone: Some kids like glue sticks and glitter. Others like rampaging through tunnels or shooting bows and arrows.

  • Metropolitan Black Bar Association ‘amplifies its legacy’ at 42nd annual awards reception: This year’s theme, “Amplifying Our Legacy: Strengthening our Network, Leadership and Advocacy to Advance Justice,” honored several individuals from the legal community.

  • ‘Devil Wears Prada 2’ shows how Christian imagery circulates in unusual ways through the fashion industry: For centuries, fashion was cast as the troublesome, if not villainous, enemy of a pure and spiritual Christianity – a symbol of putting material desires before holy ones.
