THE LEDE: Good morning. “Henry Miller epitomizes something Brooklynites are famous for — attitude,” writes Brooklyn Eagle columnist William A. Gralnick. “Forget that he was a brilliant writer with a world-class command of the English language. Miller was in your face about not giving a damn.”

The Rundown

  • From 2,000 runners to 60,000: The 5-borough New York City Marathon at 50: The race was moved out of Central Park in celebration of the U.S. Bicentennial and to help uplift the city, which was struggling. It ended up turning into one of the marquee events in New York and marathoning for the past 50 years.

  • Henry Miller: A homeboy with an attitude: “Henry Miller didn’t give a hoot about himself, how he used his ability, what you thought of him, or what you thought of what he wrote. He didn’t give a hoot so well that ‘Tropic of Cancer’ was initially banned in the U.S.”

  • Patrick Stewart, legendary actor of ‘Star Trek’ and ‘X-Men’ fame, dies at 86: Patrick Stewart married Brooklyn songwriter and singer Sunny Ozell in 2013, with the actor’s “X-Men” co-star Ian McKellen officiating.

  • Orthodox Jewish women accuse Brooklyn fertility doc of sexual abuse: Three women accuse Dr. Richard Grazi of “forcibly grabbing, groping, and molesting” them during medical appointments in the early 2000s.

  • Some New Yorkers never carry their trash to the curb. The city should pay attention: While New York City has spent years getting garbage bags off its sidewalks, planners on Roosevelt Island addressed the issue 50 years ago.

  • Brooklyn Public Library hosts land acknowledgment ceremony at New Lots Library: Brooklyn Public Library, Gilbane Building and the East New York African Burial Ground Collective hosted a ground acknowledgment ceremony Thursday to honor and remember those who were laid to rest here as construction begins on a transformational new library for the community.

  • Spooktacular brings thrills to Dyker Heights: The afternoon featured music, tricks and treats, crafts, a pumpkin patch, a haunted house set up and a costume parade.

  • You can’t stream ‘Murphy Brown.’ Blame the music (and lawyers): Thirty-four years ago, when Vice President Dan Quayle tried to write “Murphy Brown” out of the culture, he never imagined copyright law would finish the job for him.

  • Spain’s high‑speed train network is plagued by old signalling systems. They may have caused the deadly crash: A failure in the LZB system — an automatic safety, signalling and protection system that monitors trains’ movement and activates automatic emergency braking — triggered a chain of events that led to a fatal accident, which killed 69 people and left many more injured.
