The Lede: Good morning. An Arctic air mass combined with strong northwest winds may produce dangerous wind chills as low as 15 degrees below zero from late Saturday afternoon into Sunday morning. Hypothermia, frostbite or death are possible, the National Weather Service warns.

  • Automatic fines set to begin on B68, B60 and M57 bus routes Friday: Vehicles caught improperly using busways and bus lanes, blocking bus stops or illegally double parked will receive summonses that start at $50 and escalate to $250 for repeat violators.

  • Deadly Arctic air to return to NYC this weekend, National Weather Service warns: NWS advises New York City residents to dress in layers including a hat, face mask and gloves when outside, and to keep pets indoors as much as possible. The cold wind chills could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes.

  • Mamdani endorses Hochul for reelection as New York governor: New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani endorsed Gov. Kathy Hochul for reelection on Thursday, offering the moderate governor some progressive heft as she faces a challenge from her political left in her campaign for a second full term in office.

  • Argentina requests extradition of Maduro from the US on crimes against humanity charges: An Argentine judge on Wednesday requested the extradition from the United States of former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, who was captured by the U.S. military last month and now faces federal charges of narco-terrorism and conspiracy to import cocaine in New York.

  • Time running out for SS United States as group pushes for preservation: The New York Coalition to Save the SS United States wants to see the boat returned to New York, its original home port, where a berth has been waiting for it since 2015 at the Gowanus Bay Terminal, owned by supporter John Quadrozzi, Jr.

  • Woman charged with hate crime after allegedly attacking 2 women and child: Megan Horne was charged on Wednesday with hate crime assault, hate crime aggravated harassment, act in a manner injurious to a child and assault.
