The Lede: Good morning. The completion date for renovations on the historic Carroll Gardens Library, originally scheduled for July 2025, has been delayed until summer 2026 due to unexpected construction challenges, Brooklyn Public Library explained in their “Winter 2026” update.

The Rundown

  • Urban salsa legend Willie Colón remembered at New York funeral: Although Willie Colón is most closely associated with the Bronx, he’s performed in Brooklyn throughout his career, including multiple times at the “Celebrate Brooklyn!” concert series, at Barclays Center for The New York Salsa Festival and at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.

  • Renovations on Carroll Gardens Library drag on: Built in 1905, the Carroll Gardens Library is described by Brooklyn Public Library as one of Brooklyn’s most beautiful Carnegie branches, featuring a barrel-vaulted ceiling and other historical features.

  • Explosives thrown near Gracie Mansion investigated as ‘ISIS-related terrorism’: New York City’s police commissioner said Monday that authorities are investigating whether men who brought improvised explosive devices to a protest outside New York City’s mayoral residence were inspired by ISIS.

  • 6 arrested after explosive devices deployed at Gracie Mansion protest: Emir Balat and Ibrahim Kayumi, two counter-protestors from Pennsylvania, remained in custody on Sunday on charges related to the devices; a third person was arrested for pepper-spraying a counter-protestor and three others at the scene were arrested for disorderly conduct.

  • Community meeting tonight about dangerous traffic conditions on Columbia Street: A coalition of Columbia Street Waterfront District schools, small business owners, parents and local advocates will convene a community meeting tonight at 6 p.m. to call on the city to address what they call increasingly unpredictable and dangerous traffic conditions along Columbia Street.

  • First small business ‘pops up’ at Brooklyn Navy Yard’s Opportunity Shop — and it’s a yummy one: During each three-month rotation, businesses will offer their products at a storefront in Building 92, which is open to the entire community.

  • Multi-pronged sting dismantles gun trafficking operation: Defendant Khyle Williams has been charged with 176 crimes for allegedly illegally selling firearms, with Flatbush being a backdrop for the sales.

  • How NYC small businesses are putting AI to work for them: AI-driven job losses dominate the headlines. But with help from training programs, some New York City small businesses and nonprofits are learning to use the technology to work smarter, not leaner. (THE CITY)
