The Lede: Good morning. A massive snow storm pummeled the northeast United States on Monday, trapping millions of people in their homes amid strong wind and blizzard warnings, transportation shutdowns, and school and business closures.

  • NYC schools set to reopen today after Winter Storm Hernando: After Mayor Zohran Mamdani canceled public school classes on Monday for the “first old-school snow day since 2019,” he later announced that the city's public schools would reopen today. School buses will operate as normal.

  • Blizzard warnings and travel bans trap millions at home in Northeast: The storm hit the metropolitan northeast as accumulations from an earlier snowfall had just melted away — except for gray mountainous piles in parking lots and along the side of roads.

  • 2,000 NYC Con Ed customers without power in middle of blizzard Monday: Roughly 2,000  New York City residents had lost electrical power by midday Monday, as Con Edison crews worked through the blizzard to restore service.
